You’re Almost Done!
Let’s Get Those Legal Docs Signed
Thanks for joining us for Adulting 101: The Legal Docs Your 18-Year-Old Actually Needs. Here’s everything you need to finish up your documents and make them official.
Quick Refresher: What These Documents Do
Here’s a reminder of what you’re filling out (and why it matters):
Power of Attorney
Allows someone you trust to help with finances and legal stuff (like banking or insurance paperwork) if you ever need help.
Names someone to make medical decisions for you if you can’t speak for yourself.
Health Care Proxy
HIPAA Authorization
Gives someone permission to talk to doctors or access your medical info in an emergency.
⚠️ FERPA Reminder: We don’t have a standard FERPA form — each school creates their own version of this. If you're going to college or any school that receives federal education funding, check directly with your school about how to authorize a parent or trusted adult to access grades, billing info, etc.

Here's How It Works:
We’re holding two Open House Signing Sessions at our office next week:
🗓 Wednesday, July 30 from 5:00–7:00 PM
🗓 Thursday, July 31 from 5:00–6:00 PM
📍718 Saratoga Road, Burnt Hills, NY 12027 (Right next to Pizza Works)
📞 Questions? Call us at (518) 309-2252
You can drop by anytime during these time blocks — no need to call ahead.
✅ You can fill out your forms ahead of time, print them, and bring them with you.
✅ Or, we’ll have blank paper copies available to fill out by hand at the office.
🔴 Do NOT sign anything ahead of time.
All documents must be signed in front of our notary and witnesses.
🪪 Bring a photo ID — our notary will need to make a copy.
Before You Come:
Important for Parents:
Your young adult must be present in person to sign the documents.
We cannot notarize or witness anything unless the young adult is physically here, in front of us.
That means: no dropping off documents your kid signed at home.
This is non-negotiable, even if you're super persuasive and really charming.
Cost: FREE
This is a free service we’re offering as a way to support young adults in our community as they wrap up summer and head into whatever’s next.
That said, we’re limiting this service to unmarried young adults, ages 18–21, who don’t have minor children.
Why? Because for this Adulting 101 group, simple forms are usually enough — and we feel good about helping them DIY these basics the right way.
For adults with more complicated situations (think: mortgages, children, blended families, small businesses), cookie-cutter forms can do more harm than good. If you’re in this category, see the note below about how to get your own planning done the right way.

A Light Legal Note...
We’re offering this free resource as a community service — not legal representation.
Completing and notarizing these documents doesn’t create an attorney-client relationship with your young adult (or you).
We’re not keeping your forms or tracking anything after you sign them— just helping you get them done the right way.
If your family wants more than just forms — and would benefit from having an ongoing relationship with a trusted legal advisor — you can learn more about how we work with families here.
